best answer: (IMHO, not the actual best answer) [start answer] Yes, of course. Emotional intimacy .... being able to share one's experiences, thoughts and emotions .... trusting one another ... it's what makes any relationship worthwhile and meaningful.
If you are talking about physical intimacy it isn't necessary. It's not the only dynamic in a relationship. The importance of it in a relationship depends greatly on the relationship between those two people and how the other person feels about it. There have been many many couples who have remained celebate throughout their relationship either in part or whole .... either because they didn't want to have sex before marriage or because of other emotional / practical issues. Some people have emotional concerns (perhaps because of rape, incest, fear or trust). Some people have physical limitation due to health issues, lack of desire or having an infectious disease. There are many reasons why couples may choose to abstain from sex.
It doesn't have to hinder a relationship. You can be creative in finding other ways to connect, show affection and appreciate one another. A loving massage, kissing, cuddles, dancing together, sleeping next to one another are all ways to have increased physical intimacy without going "all the way." If that's not what you want to do at this point in time don't let anyone pressure you into it. Don't let anyone tell you that it's mandatory in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Any boyfriend / girlfriend who truly cares about the other person will respect his/her boundaries and feelings and not pressure you into something that you are not ready for.
